Title of the film- Incubus. I think that this title suits the conventions of a thriller in that the meaning of the word incubus meaning 'an imaginary demon or evil spirit supposed to descend upon sleeping persons' the meaning of the title already conforms to conventions of a thriller by highlighting to the audience the presence of an evil minded creature/ character/ spirit. Furthermore the fact that the title is only one suits the conventions of a thriller and as such many well known thrillers also have one worded titles in order to leave some mystery surrounding the content of the film e.g. Saw, Inception,Taken.
Titles font ans style of the opening- The titles of the opening are in a white font chosen in order to stand out against the darkness of the station scene they fade in and out against the footage in order to keep a high speed pace and tension that should be evident throughout a conventional thriller. Similarly we chose to use the fade transition on the opening credits the keep apparent the dream theme of the thriller and elevate to the audience the sense of mystery and uncertain. Furthermore we wanted the white of the text to coincide with the white mask of the dream figure. This may challenge the conventions of a typical thriller as many we have analysed appear very rapid and bold containing large bold fonts to convey a sense of drama.
Setting/Location- At the train station is where a large quantity of action takes place within the thriller. This may go against some conventions of a thriller in that a train station is a highly public area and it is unlikely that real life action would occur there such as it does in our thriller, on the other hand the darkness of the train station and the load nice of passing trains to create a stereotypical scene for a thriller. We were really pleased with the atmosphere created by the lighting of the station we felt as if it create just the right amount of light to create a good atmosphere allowing the audience to see the characters well but allowing elements of their figures to be hidden by the darkness.
Costumes and props- During filming our main female or 'victim' was seen to be wearing a long floral dress and white buckle up shoes. We chose a costume like this to highlight to the audience how childlike and venerable the character is. Similarly we chose an ordinary everyday costume for the villain female character to make her appear normal and unsuspecting when she is infant the one who enters the victims dream in disguise. For the masked dream figure we chose an all white mask to keep the character unidentifiable and to contrast against the dark surroundings of the train station. These costumes conform to the conventions of a thriller as they often attempt to portray the victim as small and venerable by making their costume appear white a childlike such as the white blouse of the female character appearing in the opening of 'cape fear'.
How characters are introduced- When the audience is first introduced to the characters there meeting appears very fast and urgent giving the thriller a sense of pace and danger. Similarly we tried to create an enigma surrounding the female character who comes down the stairs to meet her friend the audience are supposed to question whether the female character is in fact the masked figure who appears in the victims dream. The dream figure is introduced in various areas of the train station at which the scene is taking place but is never seen together with the two female character which is supposed to suggests to the audience they are in fact the same person but in a disguise in which she uses to enter her friends dream and murder her. This may be a convention of a thriller as many character to appear to victims within dreams such a 'freddie kruger' and 'inception'. We tried to make our villain evident throughout the opening using inserts of the figure appearing around the train station to leave the audience questioning the presence of this character and the enigma of who the character may be and the fact that this character is never seen together with the female character conveys to the audience the fact that this character could infant be one of the female characters in disguise.Further more we wanted the dream character to appear masked to keep a sense of mystery and suspicion surrounding the characters identity. This may be a convention of a thriller as a lot of villains within thrillers appear to have masked identities such as 'scream' ,'the unborn' and 'freddy vs Jason.'
Story and how the opening sets it up-The story line of the thriller is quite complicated, it sees a character haunt the dreams of her friend in a dream like mask disguise and she later murders this friend within the dream. We tried to highlight to the audience the idea of the characters being in a dream together by showing both characters injecting themselves and entering a dream state and by using black and white effects on most of the dream sequences to highlight the fact that the action is taking place within the dream. When the opening begins we attempted to portray the storyline by setting up these characters to meet at the atmospheric setting of the train station and also including cutaways of the dream figure the suggest the characters presence within this setting and to highlight to the audience the enigma of who this character may be. This conforms to the conventions of a thriller as often unsuspecting peripheral character appear to be the main subjects of the plot.Similarly villains appearing in dreams may be a convention of a thriller with films such as 'nightmare on elm street' containing villainous characters killing victims throughout their dreams. And also the idea of a figure being able to enter a dream can be seen in one of our inspiration for our opening 'inception' which showed characters being able to enter others dreams by using and injection device from a silver case which we tried to convey within our opening by using a silver case and tubing similar to that of the film.
Camerawork and editing-During our opening we tried to use a wide range of camera shots to convey different ideas among the action being shown. We used a lot of long shots of the dream figure to convey to the audience a sense of physical distance and mystery surrounding the character to make sure the audience is aware of the characters presence and importance to the storyline. Similarly we used some high angle shots to portray this character to make them appear dominant and powerful over the venerable female character. We also highlighted this sense of looking down by including some shots of trains speeding past from the bridge at the station to make it seem as if the shot was from the characters viewpoint. This is a convention of a typically thriller as often directors will attempt to make figures appear venerable by showing them being 'looked down on' and physically smaller.
